Integrative Care for Endocrine, Metabolic & Gut Health
Naturopathic and Functional Medicine in Newport Beach
Hormonal, metabolic, and digestive concerns can influence energy, mood, sleep, weight, menstrual health, blood sugar, bowel function, and overall quality of life. Because symptoms frequently overlap, meaningful care begins with understanding the whole person rather than focusing on an isolated laboratory result.
Dr. Quan Nguyen, ND, MPH, is a California-licensed naturopathic doctor providing personalized care for endocrine, metabolic, and digestive concerns at Inspire Natural Wellness in Newport Beach.
Understanding the Connections
The endocrine system produces hormones that help regulate metabolism, reproduction, stress responses, sleep, blood sugar, and many other essential functions.
Digestive health also plays an important role in nutrition, medication absorption, immune function, and overall well-being. At the same time, endocrine conditions can affect digestion. Thyroid disorders, diabetes, hormonal transitions, medications, and chronic stress may all influence appetite, bowel function, weight, and energy.
Dr. Quan’s approach considers these relationships without assuming that every symptom has a single underlying cause.
Endocrine and Metabolic Areas of Care
Dr. Quan provides integrative support for concerns involving:
Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease
Hyperthyroidism in coordination with appropriate specialty care
Polycystic ovary syndrome
Irregular menstrual cycles
Perimenopause and menopause
Men’s hormonal health
Insulin resistance and prediabetes
Type 2 diabetes alongside appropriate medical management
Metabolic syndrome
Weight and metabolic-health concerns
Fatigue or changes in energy that may involve endocrine factors
Medication and hormone-related questions
The goal is not simply to “balance hormones.” It is to identify clinically meaningful patterns, clarify what requires treatment, and develop an individualized plan based on your symptoms, medical history, laboratory findings, and health goals.
Digestive and Gut Health Support
Digestive symptoms may affect nutrition, energy, comfort, and daily functioning. Integrative evaluation may be appropriate for concerns such as:
Bloating and abdominal discomfort
Constipation or diarrhea
Irritable bowel syndrome
Indigestion and reflux
Changes in bowel habits
Food-related symptoms
Nutritional deficiencies
Suspected celiac disease
Concerns involving H. pylori
Digestive symptoms associated with stress, medications, or hormonal changes
Persistent or concerning digestive symptoms may require imaging, endoscopy, gastroenterology referral, or other conventional evaluation. Integrative care should complement—not delay—appropriate medical investigation.
A Comprehensive, Personalized Evaluation
Your initial consultation may include a detailed review of:
Current symptoms and when they began
Previous diagnoses and laboratory findings
Menstrual, reproductive, or menopausal history
Energy, sleep, stress, and physical activity
Nutrition and meal patterns
Digestive symptoms and bowel function
Weight and metabolic changes
Current medications and supplements
Personal and family medical history
Previous endocrine or gastroenterology care
This broader assessment helps determine which concerns can be addressed within naturopathic care and when collaboration or referral is appropriate.
Laboratory Testing When Clinically Appropriate
Testing is selected according to your history, symptoms, and existing medical records. It may include:
Thyroid function and thyroid antibodies
Blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and selected metabolic markers
Lipid and cardiovascular-risk markers
Reproductive hormones when clinically relevant
Nutritional markers
Blood counts and general chemistry
Appropriate evaluation for celiac disease
Testing for H. pylori
Breath, stool, or other digestive testing when medically indicated
Not every patient requires an extensive hormone panel, cortisol profile, genetic test, or comprehensive stool analysis. Testing should be ordered when the findings are likely to clarify the diagnosis or meaningfully influence treatment.
What About “Adrenal Fatigue”?
The fatigue, poor sleep, stress intolerance, dizziness, and difficulty recovering that people sometimes describe as “adrenal fatigue” are real experiences and deserve thoughtful evaluation.
However, “adrenal fatigue” is not a medically established diagnosis, and generalized saliva cortisol profiles do not diagnose it. Similar symptoms may be associated with sleep disorders, anemia, thyroid dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies, medication effects, mood disorders, metabolic concerns, post-viral illness, or other medical conditions.
True adrenal disorders, including adrenal insufficiency, require appropriate medical testing and treatment.
An Individualized Treatment Plan
Depending on your clinical needs, recommendations may include:
Personalized nutritional guidance
Sleep, movement, and stress-regulation strategies
Support for blood-sugar and metabolic health
Botanical medicine or nutritional supplementation
Medication and supplement review
Prescription management when clinically appropriate
Support during perimenopause or menopause
Digestive-health strategies based on your symptoms and diagnosis
Ongoing laboratory monitoring
Coordination with primary care, endocrinology, gynecology, gastroenterology, or other specialists
Care is adjusted over time according to your response, preferences, laboratory findings, and broader medical needs.
Begin with a Thoughtful Evaluation
If you are experiencing hormonal, metabolic, or digestive concerns, an initial consultation can help clarify which factors may be relevant and what next steps are appropriate.
Dr. Quan will take time to understand your health history, review existing information, and develop a personalized plan that integrates naturopathic care with appropriate conventional evaluation and treatment.
New or severe symptoms—including significant abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, fainting, confusion, or rapidly worsening weakness—require prompt medical evaluation.
